In 2010, UNESCO designated all land above 3500 feet in the upcountry Knuckles Range of Sri Lanka a World Heritage site, aiming to preserve the natural beauty and protect several unique endangered species living within its boundaries.
This collection of images was taken around a former colonial tea estate, which happened to be within the borders of the newly protected site.
Tamil families had been living and working on this estate for over a century and would have continued here had it not been for the new prohibition of farming within the World Heritage area.
